The town of Deva is on the left bank of the Mures, close
to the railway station. To the west of it rises a steep cone of trachyt, the top of which is crowned by the picturesque ruins of the fortress of Deva. In the time of the Grand-dukes of Transylvania it was of considerable importance as a border fortress dominating the whole valley of the Mures.

In the last century it was destroyed, but rebuilt in 1829 for the garrison of the border district. The very thick stone walls were partly repaired in 1844. In 1849, the Hungarians tried to starve the Austrian garrison out, but had to blow up the fortress. Since then it has been in ruins.
